When we were just preparing to move into our house, I imagined that our living room table would have a pretty vase with fresh flowers, and there would be a couple of coffee-table books, maybe about art, around it. But then again, with young children in the house, we thought that wasn’t practical yet. Instead, this is how our living room table looks like…
Each one of us has his/her own pile of reading materials. I used to ask the kids to have just one book on the table at a time, but they like to have a lot of their books around. Right now, Chino is reading “The 39 Clues: Maze of Bones”. His pile includes Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, some Boxcar children books, his Pirate-o-Pedia, some books on animals and a Secret Seven book (handed down by Tita Niks). Trixi is reading “Hiccups for Elephant”. Her pile includes a Treasury for 5-year olds, some Blue’s Clues books, Stories and Rhymes, and even Kuya’s Pilipinas Kong Mahal from Prep. They select which books to bring down from their shelves in the den.
The living room table is also where the kids like to hang around. They have a separate study table, but somehow, they just end up writing or drawing or coloring in the living room. Just the other night, while I was preparing dinner, Chino and Trixi were writing their own books.
So I guess that pretty vase will have to wait a little while longer.
